After months of debate and friendly matches, at last the time had come for Gareth Southgate to select his final England squad for the 2018 World Cup. So, which twenty-three players would be on that plane to Russia?

To announce the names to the nation, the FA released a special video where each player was revealed one by one by young England fans.

First up, a group of kids in a takeaway:

‘RAHEEM STERLING!’ a girl with glasses exclaimed eagerly.

‘Of course, he’s going, bruv!’ one of her friends added and everyone else cheered loudly.

Next up: John Stones, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Danny Rose, Eric Dier…

A few clips later, the camera zoomed in on a tall grey tower block where a girl and a boy were holding up a big white banner. They yelled the two words written there at the tops of their voices:

‘HARRY MAGUIRE!’

…Jamie Vardy, Gary Cahill, Ashley Young, Jack Butland, Phil Jones, Nick Pope, Jesse Lingard, Jordan Henderson, Fabian Delph, Dele Alli, Kyle Walker…

Next, the video showed another tall tower block, this time in Sunderland, where two kids were playing on a caged pitch nearby.

‘JORDAN PICKFORD!’ the boy in goal called out as he caught the ball between his gloves. ‘Repping for the Mackems!’

…Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Danny Welbeck, Marcus Rashford, Kieran Trippier…

Last but by no means least, the video focused in on a London bus and a group of kids sitting at the back on the top deck.

‘There’s only one HARRY KANE!’ the boy in the middle shouted.

‘Walthamstow’s finest!’ one of the others declared, starting off a chant of ‘Oi oi oi!’

So, that was it: the twenty-three talented footballers chosen to represent England at the twenty-first FIFA World Cup. Southgate’s squad was full of energy, skill, youth and excitement, but the big question was: could they finally bring football home, after fifty-two years of hurt? Only time would tell. One thing was for sure, though:

‘Russia 2018 – The Three Lions are coming, and they’re hungry.’
